Completing QTLS While on a Visa: A Guide for PSW
Students
Understanding QTLS and Visa Requirements
QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) is a professional status in the UK that
recognizes an individual’s ability to teach at the sixth-form level and above. Holders of
QTLS, as of 2012, by law, can also teach in primary and secondary schools. For PSW
(Post-Study Work) visa holders, completing QTLS can be a valuable step towards securing
long-term employment in the UK education sector.
Key Considerations for PSW Students
Ensure your PSW visa allows you sufficient time to engage in teaching activities. Check the
specific terms and conditions of your visa. It is better to start as soon as you have received
your Post-graduate visa.
QTLS Requirement
If you are embarking on this route, please familiarise yourself with the QTLS requirements,
which include you being the holder of Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or Level 5
Diploma in Teaching, your GCSE Maths and English or equivalent and your academic
qualification like a bachelor degree or equivalent.
Strategies for Completing QTLS on a Visa
SCCD networks with schools who already hold sponsorships to hire overseas teachers on highly skilled workers visas. There are over 2000 schools and colleges across England which have already applied for visas and hold licences to employ qualified candidates.
Highly Skilled workers visas are normally issued for five years. At the end of this period, the candidate can then apply for indefinite leave to remain.
By carefully planning and utilising the resources available, PSW students can successfully complete QTLS while on a visa, opening doors to a rewarding career in UK education.
It is very easy. The candidate completes the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching which lasts for one year. Upon receiving their Diploma, they apply for their QTLS.
What SCCD does differently is that once the candidate commences their training, the candidate is placed in a school that already holds a sponsorship. This allows for both school or college and candidate sufficient time for evaluation and decision to decide on sponsorship.
